What A Perfect Murder does well is it takes a somewhat cliché murder story and gives it enough storyline and plot development to make it interesting and entertaining. Although I knew what was going to happen every step of the way, I didn’t care because it was handled so well.
If you are looking for a good murder story you could certainly do a lot worse than A Perfect Murder. Who better to play a cold hearted rich business man than Michael Douglas? Steven Taylor (Douglas) is a calm, calculated, evil individual that is ruled by greed and hatred. Steven Taylor is a vengeful man consumed by lies and deceit yet manages to hide it so well. Douglas is able to pull off this smooth sophisticated character very well to the point where you can’t imagine anyone else playing the part. Gwyneth Paltrow is Emily Bradford Taylor, an amazing performance. The raw emotion of a woman being torn apart by lies and greed.
I would have rated this film a seven had it been more original. The nosy detective Mohamed Karaman played by David Suchet was just too cliché for my taste. That and David Shaw (Viggo Mortensen) Emily’s lover was a little bland a character for me, some development of Shaw would have been a wonderful thing.
